BASKETBALL

The Headquarters Battery basketball team played its first game in September 1944 on a dirt floored court in Gennevilliers France, a suburb of Paris. A Battalion league was formed and games were played in Gennevilliers and Asnieres. Several French teams were played and we defeated all of them. The battalion league in Paris ended in late November1944 with an equal number of victories and defeats for Headquarters Battery. The buzz bombs in Liege and the fighting during the Battle of the Bulge prevented any more basketball until we reached Namur, Belgium in January 1945. A league of ten teams was formed by Hq. Advanced Section Communications Zone in which Headquarters Battery participated. Hq. A, B, C, and D batteries of the 143rd, 863rd AAA AW Bn., Signal Corps, QM, Comm Z Hq. and Special Service were the ten teams in the league. The 204th AAA and the 788th AAA were also played in nonleague games. Hq. Battery was among the league leaders when we were ordered to Verviers, Belgium in March 1945 and our basketball playing was ended for the season. The two "big" little men, Powell and Hagelshaw were the consistent high point men with Petrucci and Blessinger contributing.
